There are plenty of things you can do around your house to improve your garage security. Garages tend to be weak points in houses and are most often the point of entry. They are often not properly protected, have several tools that intruders can use for their purposes, are messy and therefore more difficult for someone to know that someone else has been in there, can store valuable equipment, and are not an inhabitable part of the house, making detecting an intruder more unlikely.
Lock the doors to your garage as often as you lock them to your house. That alone may be enough to deter someone. Make sure they are strong locks, too.
Do not leave a house key underneath a doormat or flower pot, or anything near the door. Anything ornamental, convenient, too clean, or in proximity to the door will be searched. If you are going to leave the key somewhere, but it some place inconvenient for you. Chances are, you will have your house keys with you most of the time anyway. In an emergency you still have a way in but you are not spoon-feeding your valuables to someone, either.
Video cameras are always great to have in a garage. They are easy to hide and completely unexpected. If you have a home security system, make sure it reaches the garage, too. Try to avoid dog flaps and cat flaps, as they are easily breached.
There is more to garage safety than just thinking about someone breaking in. Automatic garage doors are the best to have because you do not have to risk hurting your back lifting a door, nor be vulnerable when you get out of your car to lift it. Get one with a sensor so anything under the door will prohibit the door from coming down.
Store your stuff. Do not leave any valuable equipment out where anyone could see it. If you can put it in a basement and lock it, then do it. There is much that can be dangerous in a garage. Be neat so you can more easily see if something is out of place. This will help you keep track of your perilous equipment and will clue you in if someone has been through your things.
Stacking wood is a common garage procedure, but many times has the pile toppled over on people or cars. To ensure this does not happen to you, stack the wood at a slight angle toward the wall. If you stack it straight, the wood could expand or contract with temperature changes and the pile could shift.
